With a weight of 6.68g. Date is not visible, but the assayer mark of B dates this coin between 1600 and 1610, and is much harder and less available than the assayer V 2 escudos! Royal Mint of Spain (Real Casa de la Moneda), Madrid, Spain (1591-date). Philip III was the King of Spain and King of Portugal and the Algarves, where he ruled as Philip II of Portugal from 1598 until his death. Philip III married Margaret of Austria, sister of Emperor Ferdinand II member of the House of Habsburg. Born in Madrid, the son of Philip II of Spain and his fourth wife (and niece) Anna, he shared the viewpoints and beliefs of his father, including his piety, but did not inherit his industry. The diligent old king hand sorrowfully confessed that God had not given him a son capable of governing his vast dominions, and that he has foreseen that Philip III would be led by his servants. Unlike his father, Philip III was not interested in the day-to-day business of government. He spent many months each year traveling to different palaces with his court, away from the government centre. His household costs rose enormously at a time of falling income. He died in Madrid in 1621. The story told in the memoirs of the French ambassador Bassompierre, that he was killed in the heat of a brasero (a pan of hot charcoal), because the proper official to take it away was not at hand, is a humorous exaggeration of the formal etiquette of the court. Obverse: Cross potent within polylobe, without inward-facing lis-symbols. Four annulets in outer fields and traces of legend around. Legend: + HISPANIARVM REX. Reverse: Crowned spanish coat-of-arms. Mint letter (S) above assayer initial (B) in left field. For your consideration a rare Spanish gold 2 escudos cob coin, struck at the Seville mint under Philip III of Spain. A beautiful 100% authentic gold 2 escudos cob coin from the Atocha Era graded in a NGC MS 61 Graded Slab Holder which is one of 3 in this grade with NONE FINER! Philip III (Spanish: Felipe III; April 14, 1578 March 31, 1621) was the King of Spain and King of Portugal and the Algarves, where he ruled as Philip II of Portugal (Portuguese: Filipe II), from 1598 until his death. His chief minister was the Duke of Lerma. Philip III married Margaret of Austria, sister of Emperor Ferdinand II, and like her husband, a member of the House of Habsburg. Spain 8 Escudos 1717 “Extremely Bold Date” NGC 58. SPAIN 1717 8 ESCUDOS NGC 58 POPULATION 1! GOLD TREASURE PIRATE COIN FLEET EXCEEDINGLY RARE Literally ONLY 1 KNOWN! Most importantly for this issue (besides Rarity of course) is the Strike of the Date and this one is incredible!!! Remember these pieces were MILLED in Spain at this time (in fact, they milled gold coins as early as the 1500s we have some gorgeous Gold Escudos Milled from 1607 and 1608 as well). Imagine this press almost like a baker using a rolling pin to spread out his dough, this is very similar to the mechanical device use and as such, most to this type have fluctuating surfaces and details very common to see Soft Cross, legends, etc.. However, this piece has a Very Strongly pressed CROSS and DATE! In addition, typically these pieces are shifted and the Rim (denticales pie crust) are many times completely missing. The Centering on this piece however is Excellent! This Spanish Gold Type is collected by date, and this piece is the ONLY one known! The item “SPAIN 1717 8 ESCUDOS NGC 58 ONLY 1 KNOWN! ULTRA HIGH GRADE FINEST OF ONLY 3 KNOWN! Carlos II gold Cob 4 Escudos 1700 L-H, KM25, MS65 NGC. Due to its long-standing association with “treasure, ” numismatists have long been attracted to cob coinage. Most broad-based collectors find it worthwhile to add at least one representative to their collections. For most, this means picking up one of the many silver denominations; for the more financially secure, it often means the acquisition an 8 Escudo type from a shipwreck salvage, like the 1715 Plate Fleet. While these shipwrecks have given supply to the collectors who desire to connect with this era of Spanish Colonial coinage, their hauls have, for the most part, been absent of the 4 Escudos type. As such, any issue of the 4 Escudos denomination, especially during Carlos II’s reign, is rare, and any offering is met with great enthusiasm. The present 4 Escudos however stands at a great distance from the others – it is very likely the single finest example extant from the reign of Carlos II. The strike, often severely misplaced on the flan, is almost perfectly centered with both sides showing near complete border beading. Only slight strike doubling exists. All said, this is undoubtedly one of the finest jewels in a collection of wonderful treasures. For the collector that demands the finest, this is certainly an opportunity that shouldn’t be overlooked. Add a map to your own listings. This is an exemplary piece in both Centering, Absence of ANY doubling, an incredibly Bold Strike and highly lustrous in color high kt. The survival of this piece will almost assuredly secure it’s claim as Finest Known though out the ages! CHARLES II died in 1700 childless and heirless so he named his successor to be his 16 year old grand-nephew, Philip Vth, who was the grandson of of the reigning French King Louis XIV. European powers viewed the relationship as disturbing the balance of power in Europe, which caused the War of Succession. This war would carry on into 1715’s, during which time (15 years of war), for the last four years there were no Treasure ships coming over from the New World back to Spain with Gold, Silver and Jewels. The king Philip Vth had now found a new wife after his first one had just died, so he ordered the fleet (the 1715 Plate Fleet) to voyage back to Spain with her built up Treasure in July 1715 (during hurricane season) and the rest is famous history. Eleven of those 12 ships sank off the coast of Florida in July 1715 (see Shipwreck History on our website at: PirateGoldCoins. Com). Get Vendio Gallery – Now FREE! Add a map to your own listings.
