Mickey’s 90th Anniversary. The New York Bank Hoard. Coins That Never Were. 2019 Graded Silver Panda. Royal Mint New Releases. The coin is one of seven issued by the US Mint to mark the fiftieth anniversary of one of the species’s biggest accomplishments: the first walk on the moon. The coins are just the second domed releases in the history of the US Mint. Part of a mintage of 50,000 pieces, this coin was struck on an 8.359 g planchet of. 900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a “W” mint mark. A contest was held to find the obverse design for this coin, and Gary Cooper’s artwork won out. It features a footprint left on the lunar surface by one of its first visitors. Arching over this image are the names of the NASA programs that made possible the landing, “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and “APOLLO, ” along with images of the moon in different phases. “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” the national motto, are among the other inscriptions on the obverse. The reverse is a reproduction of a photo that was taken of Buzz Aldrin’s visor during his visit to the moon. The reflection in the visor dominate this face, and the convex design replicates the shape of his helmet. Neil Armstrong stands between the American flag and the lunar module in the reflection. The face value of the coin, “FIVE DOLLARS, ” is included in the upper left. Other parts of the helmet bear the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” (From many, one). This coin earned Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC’s) highest grade, Mint State 70 (MS70), which is reserved for coins that are in perfect condition as seen under 5x magnification. It also received Early Releases (ER) certification, which indicates that it was received for grading no more than 30 days after the coin’s initial mint release. With Apollo 11 Mission Patch.
