This is one of those few new world gold coins that rarely ever comes to market because there were so few struck and the ones that were struck were usually used by the Portuguese to trade and were melted down by foreign buyers to strike their own local currency. These coins are almost impossible to find especially from the Rio De Janeiro mint and not from the Lisbon Mint. Made with gold from the new world! He had told grandfather he had found only one of these early Brazilian gold coins in all of his dives and that it was found off the northern coast of Brazil on one of his earlier dives and was found with a few Portuguese silver coins and a gold necklace on a shallow reef wreck about 400 yards from where they found the anchor. The diver in his old age had mounted the coin into a necklace which he wore every time he went diving for good luck and was only willing to part with it in his old age since he could no longer dive. Grandfather had the coin removed from the necklace and put it into his collection where it stayed until I inherited it and sent it on for grading a few years back. An amazing piece of new world history, and a rare overlooked part of the Portuguese empire who controlled the other half of the new World and is often forgotten as the empire which provided the maps from prince Henry the navigator that the Spaniards used to reach the new world.
