About Liberty Head Eagles The Liberty Head Gold Eagle was introduced in 1838 following a three decade hiatus in production for the ten dollar gold denomination. The new series featured an updated design by Christian Gobrecht as well as a reduced weight and diameter. Production would take place across five different mint facilities until the conclusion of the series in 1907. During this span, mintages ranged from a mere 100 pieces to multiple millions, creating both rarities and common issues. The series also contains a number of conditional rarities, as extensive circulation sometimes left few or no surviving examples in mint state grades. This would remain the case until the early 1830’s when the rising price of gold made the melt value of the half eagles and quarter eagles higher than their respective face values. The Coinage Act of 1834 would bring things back into balance by realigning the precious metal content and face values across all gold denominations. This would also clear the way for the reintroduction of the eagle as the highest circulating denomination. The design for the Liberty Gold Eagle was created by Christian Gobrecht. He was serving as the Assistant Engraver of the United States Mint, but in time he would ascend to the role of Chief Engraver. He had been responsible for the Liberty Seated design, which was utilized across all silver denominations of his era. Likewise, the design he created for the eagle would later be adopted for the remaining gold denominations. Gobrecht’s designs would bring a measure of uniformity across United States coinage, which would endure for many decades. Obverse Design The Liberty Eagle features the head of Liberty facing left. She wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and her hair is bound with a beaded ribbon. The date appears below and thirteen stars are placed evenly around. The obverse for eagles of 1838 and some of 1839 features a design known as “Type of 1838″ differentiated by the pointed truncation of the neck and a partially covered ear. The modified form of the design known as “Type of 1840″ would be used for the remaining coins of the series. Reverse Design The reverse design depicts a bald eagle, grasping an olive branch in one talon and three arrows in the other. The eagle’s wings are spread, and a large shield is placed at its breast. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around and TEN D. Is near the bottom rim, representing the first time the face value was included on the denomination. The reverse underwent two changes during the course of the series. The larger lettering used for the “Type of 1838″ was reduced in size when the “Type of 1840″ was introduced. In 1866, a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST was added above the head of the eagle. This motto had been added to the majority of denominations following the conclusion of the American Civil War. About Liberty Head Half Eagles Spanning from 1839 to 1908, the Liberty Half Eagle was the longest running series for the five dollar gold denomination. During the course of the series, coins would be struck across seven different mint facilities, resulting in more than 200 different issues. Mintages would cover a wide range from just a few hundred to more than one million pieces. The overall series can be divided into two subtypes based on the addition of a banner with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST to the reverse design following the American Civil War. After numerous design changes, the half eagle as well as the other gold denominations would find stability in a new design created by Christian Gobrecht. He had performed work for the Mint as early as 1823, become Assistant Engraver in 1835, and finally Chief Engraver in 1840. His design for the half eagle had previously been introduced on the eagle in 1838 and would later be adopted for the quarter eagle in 1840. Obverse Design The obverse design of the Liberty Half Eagle features the head of Liberty facing left. Her hair is mostly bound up in a bun with a string of beads intertwined and a few locks falling towards her neck. She wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Thirteen stars appear evenly spaced surrounding the portrait with the date below. Reverse Design The reverse closely resembles the previous type, which was a modified form of the design created by John Reich in 1807. A bald eagle is portrayed with its wings spread and a large shield at its breast. Its talons grasp a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears surrounding with the denomination expressed as FIVE D. Except for differences in the size of the lettering, the design for the Liberty Half Eagle remained unchanged for the first 25 years of the series. In 1866, a major change was executed on the reverse, with the addition of the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll directly above the eagle. The motto had first appeared on the two cent piece in 1864 in response to a request from Reverend Mark R. Watkinson to add a reference to God on coinage during the time of war. In the following year, an act of Congress permitted the motto to be added to all denominations which could accommodate it. For the gold denominations, the motto would be added to the half eagle, eagle, and double eagle. Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco. 0.2419 troy oz. About Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles The Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is widely considered to feature the most beautiful designs in the history of United States coinage. Created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the coins would be struck across three different mint facilities from 1907 until the recall of federal gold in 1933. During the first year of the series, a small number of patterns would be struck in ultra high relief, followed by limited production for circulation in high relief, and finally mass production in modified lower relief. The series includes a number of extremely rare issues, which were created due to the impact of mass meltings following the recall of gold coinage. The design of the series was the result of a historic collaboration between President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The president had expressed disapproval of the current circulating coin designs, all of which had been in use for more than half a century. He wanted America’s coins to be objects of beauty and expressions of national identity. He chose America’s most renown sculptor for the task of redesigning all United States circulating denominations. Ultimately, Saint-Gaudens was only able to redesign the double eagle and eagle before his death in 1907. Letters exchanged between Roosevelt and Saint-Gaudens also reveal the role which the President played in the creation of the new coin design. One of Roosevelt’s ideas was to strike the coins in high relief, referring to the extent that the sculpted images of the coin project outward. He further suggested raising the rim in order to protect the surfaces of the coin. In the ensuing months, models were prepared and further improvements were made to the original design. It was also determined that the date would be featured in Roman numerals, which would be a first on American coinage. Many of these ideas were strongly rejected by Mint officials, in particular by Chief Engraver Charles E. Throughout this period, Saint-Gaudens was struggling through cancer and his condition was worsening. Before he passed away, a small number of patterns were struck in ultra high relief. This represented the original design as intended by Saint-Gaudens, however the coins proved impractical to produce. Following Saint-Gaudens’s death, an alternate set of dies were put into production featuring the design in high relief, although this design also proved challenging to produce. Barber prepared a final set of lower relief dies, which would be used for mass production. Obverse Design The obverse features a full figure of Liberty, striding confidently forward. In one hand she holds a lit torch and in the other an olive branch. The Capitol dome can be seen in the far background and rays of the rising sun fill the fields. There are 46 stars surrounding, representing the number of states in the Union at the time. The word LIBERTY appears above. The date, which appears at lower right, was first expressed in Roman Numerals to present a classical look, but later changed to Arabic Numerals. The designer’s monogram “ASG” appears beneath the date. Reverse Design The reverse design features a bald eagle in flight. The sun appears below with its rays extending upwards into the fields. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS appear above. During 1908, the design was modified to add the motto IN GOD WE TRUST between the sun and its rays. The edge of the coin carries the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM with stars placed between each of the words. Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco. 0.9675 troy oz. Serving Collectors and Investors for Over 50 Years. Saint-Gauden introduced a new high standard of art in United States coins evidenced by his eagle and double eagle types of 1907. They were minted from 1907 – 1933 and survived the Gold Reserve Act of 1934 which outlawed private ownership of gold in the United States. Amidst periodic gaps in production, the coins would be struck across three different mint facilities from 1907 until the recall of federal gold in 1933. Mintages cover a wide range, but the scarcer issues of the series were created primarily due to the impact of melting, which led to low survival rates. Rarities also include the initial pattern and earliest design iteration created prior to the start of full-scale production. The new design for the series as well as the broad redesign of all circulating coinage of the era can be traced back to the efforts of President Theodore Roosevelt. He had grown displeased with the current designs and sought to make American coins as grand and beautiful as those of ancient Greece. To accomplish his goal, Roosevelt commissioned Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign all eligible circulating coinage. Ultimately, Saint-Gaudens would only be able to create new designs for the eagle and double eagle before his death. However, the redesign process would continue through other artists, leading to the so-called Renaissance era of United States coinage. Coin Design Saint-Gaudens’s design for the eagle features a portrait of Liberty, facing left. She wears an Indian war bonnet with the word LIBERTY inscribed on the band. There are thirteen stars above and the date appears below. The reverse of the coin features a bald eagle perched on bundle of arrows with an olive branch intertwined. The inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM to the right, and the denomination TEN DOLLARS below. The edge of the coin includes 46 raised stars to represent number of states in the Union. The design underwent a number of early changes as the United States Mint attempted to balance the relief and artistry sought by Saint-Gaudens with the technical requirements of mass production. The initial patterns were struck in higher relief and featured a wire rim. Due to stacking issues, this was modified to a rounded rim or rolled edge, and finally a standard rim and lowered relief. In 1908, the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST was added on the reverse of the coin to the left of the eagle. In 1912, the number of raised stars on the edge of the coin was increased to 48 following the admission of Arizona and New Mexico to the Union. Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco. 0.4838 troy oz.
