1598-1621 Spain 2 Escudos Gold King Philip III Seville Mint NGC MS 61
With a weight of 6.68g. Date is not visible, but the assayer mark of B dates this coin between 1600 and 1610, and is much harder and less available than the assayer V 2 escudos! Royal Mint of Spain (Real Casa de la Moneda), Madrid, Spain (1591-date). Philip III was the King of Spain and King of Portugal and the Algarves, where he ruled as Philip II of Portugal from 1598 until his death. Philip III married Margaret of Austria, sister of Emperor Ferdinand II member of the House of Habsburg. Born in Madrid, the son of Philip II of Spain and his fourth wife (and niece) Anna, he shared the viewpoints and beliefs of his father, including his piety, but did not inherit his industry. The diligent old king hand sorrowfully confessed that God had not given him a son capable of governing his vast dominions, and that he has foreseen that Philip III would be led by his servants. Unlike his father, Philip III was not interested in the day-to-day business of government. He spent many months each year traveling to different palaces with his court, away from the government centre. His household costs rose enormously at a time of falling income. He died in Madrid in 1621. The story told in the memoirs of the French ambassador Bassompierre, that he was killed in the heat of a brasero (a pan of hot charcoal), because the proper official to take it away was not at hand, is a humorous exaggeration of the formal etiquette of the court. Obverse: Cross potent within polylobe, without inward-facing lis-symbols. Four annulets in outer fields and traces of legend around. Legend: + HISPANIARVM REX. Reverse: Crowned spanish coat-of-arms. Mint letter (S) above assayer initial (B) in left field. For your consideration a rare Spanish gold 2 escudos cob coin, struck at the Seville mint under Philip III of Spain. A beautiful 100% authentic gold 2 escudos cob coin from the Atocha Era graded in a NGC MS 61 Graded Slab Holder which is one of 3 in this grade with NONE FINER! Philip III (Spanish: Felipe III; April 14, 1578 March 31, 1621) was the King of Spain and King of Portugal and the Algarves, where he ruled as Philip II of Portugal (Portuguese: Filipe II), from 1598 until his death. His chief minister was the Duke of Lerma. Philip III married Margaret of Austria, sister of Emperor Ferdinand II, and like her husband, a member of the House of Habsburg. DACIAN (GETAE) KINGDOM ca. 1st CENTURY BC-2nd CENTURY AD. REIGN OF THE DYNAST. (REIGNED AFTER 54 BC). CERTIFIED BY NGC ABOUT UNCIRCULAATED. TWO LICTORS CARRYING FASCES FLANKING AND ACCOMPANYING A ROMAN CONSUL (SAID TO BE BRUTUS OR BRUTUS’ ANCESTOR LUCIUS JUNIUS BRUTUS) LEFT; GREEK LEGEND “KOSON” IN EXERGUE; OUTER BEADING. EAGLE LEFT STANDING ON SCEPTER AND HOLDING LAUREL WREATH IN CLAW. THIS TYPE COIN IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY A DENARIUS ISSUED BY. (85-42 BC), ONE OF THE CONSIPIRATORS THAT ASSASSINATED. ON THE STEPS OF THE SENATE IN 44 BC. BRUTUS WAS ADMIRED IN HIS TIME FOR HIS INTELLECT AND POLITICAL INTEGRITY, AND HE BETRAYED HIS FRIEND AND BENEFACTOR CAESAR TO PREVENT THE LATTER FROM DESTROYING THE ROMAN REPUBLIC. THE DENARIUS ISSUE OF BRUTUS HAD BEEN STRUCK WHILE HE WAS MONEYER OF THE REPUBLIC IN 54 BC. THIS STATER WAS STRUCK AFTER CAESAR’S DEATH. BRUTUS AND HIS CO-CONSPIRATOR CASSIUS HAD FLED TO THE EASTERN PART OF THE EMPIRE TO RAISE AND PAY FOR HIS 17 LEGIONS TO FIGHT THE COMBINED TROOPS OF MARC ANTONY AND OCTAVIAN DURING THE ROMAN CIVIL WAR. THIS COIN IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN STRUCK WHILE BRUTUS WAS RAISING TROOPS IN NORTHERN GREECE IN PREPARATION FOR HIS FINAL BATTLE AT PHILIPPI. (WHO WAS ALLIED WITH BRUTUS) IS SAID TO HAVE FURNISHED THE GOLD THAT BRUTUS USED. THE ROMAN AUTHOR APPIAN STATES THAT COSON’S WIFE DELIVERED GOLD AND SILVER TO BRUTUS IN GREECE. BRUTUS AND CASSIUS WERE DEFEATED AT PHILIPPI BY OCTAVIAN (LATER TO BE KNOWN AS AUGUSTUS) AND MARC ANTHONY, AND BRUTUS COMMITTED SUICIDE SHORTLY AFTER THE BATTLE. THERE IS AN INTERPRETATION THAT THIS COIN IS THAT OF COTISO(N), A GETIC KING AND ALLY OF OCTAVIAN. OCTAVIAN IS SAID TO HAVE PROPOSED AN ALLIANCE OF MARRIAGE OF HIM TO COTISON’S DAUGHTER AND OF OCTAVIA, OCTAVIAN’S SISTER, TO THE GETIC KING. THE PROPOSAL NEVER CAME TO FRUITION AS MARC ANTHONY, ALREADY BETROTHED TO OCTAVIAN’S SISTER, OBJECTED. THOUGH THIS VERSION IS SUBSTANTIATED BY THE IMPORTANT ECONOMIC TI ES OF ROME TO DACIA AND HOARDS OF THIS TYPE STATER HAVE BEEN FOUND IN TRANSYLVANIA RATHER THAN BULGARIA (DACIA RATHER THAN THRACE), THE MORE LIKELY ORIGIN IS THAT BOTH COTISO(N) AND COSON (KOSON) ARE THE SAME PERSON AND SEVERAL ROMAN AUTHOR’S IMPLY THE COSON/BRUTUS ORIGIN IS ACCURATE. THIS COIN WAS STRUCK BETWEEN 44 AND 42 BC. WAS A BRANCH OF THE THRACIANS AND CORRESPONDED IN TERRITORY TO ROMANIA, MOLDOVA AND PARTS OF THE UKRAINE, HUNGARY AND BULGARIA. AS FAR AS ANY REFERENCE TO SCYTHIANS, THE SCYTHIANS WERE A NOMADIC IRANIAN TRIBAL STEPPE PEOPLE THAT WERE KNOWN TO THE CLASSICAL GREEKS, BUT THE ROMANS USED THE TERM TO DESIGNATE ANY GERMANIC BARBARIAN TRIBE OR CONFEDERATION, AS THE CLASSICAL SCYTHIANS DISSAPPEARED BEFORE THE FIRST CENTURY BC. Our in-house numismatist staff assign conditions to all products. The condition assigned to the products is derived from industry-wide standards. Please keep in mind that most images are stock images, and therefore you should not expect to receive the pictured products. Silver products, and some gold as well, may exhibit milk spots, and/or toning, which are normal and do not change the condition described in the listing, nor the value of the product. Coins that are holdered by one of the major grading companies are graded based on the condition they were in at the time of grading. However, at times, coins do tend to develop spotting or toning which are a normal happenstance in coins. Please keep in mind, the appearance of the toning and/or milk spots does not mean that the coin is not the grade specified on the actual slab. In instances where there is a discrepancy where the customer believes to be unjust, please refer to the grading companys guarantee policy. Both NGC and PCGS have a program where they will compensate the owner of the current coin if they believe the coin deserves a lower grade than it had originally received. Please note, bullion coins, bars and rounds are mass-produced and are not struck to the same quality standards as collector coins. These bullion products are not certified and therefore will not always be 100% perfect. All sales are final and therefore in cases when a product is offered on a Deal Price, previously locked-in orders for that product will not be subject to price reductions or cancellations. Bullion Exchanges reserves the right to cancel sales that may or may not have typography issues within the listings, pricing inaccuracies, systematic faults by our system, and/or errors caused by eBays system, without further notice. Purchasing bullion and/or coins involves price risk, and the purchaser assumes all such risk. We do not offer or make price adjustments based on the market fluctuations of precious metals, or for any other reason. We will never ask the customer to pay more for a product if the price significantly increased, so please refrain from requesting price adjustments after market prices decrease.
