The coin is one of seven issued by the US Mint to mark the fiftieth anniversary of one of the species’s biggest accomplishments: the first walk on the moon. The coins are just the second domed releases in the history of the US Mint. Part of a mintage of 50,000 pieces, this coin was struck on an 8.359 g planchet of. 900 fine gold at the West Point Mint, which is represented by a “W” mint mark. A contest was held to find the obverse design for this coin, and Gary Cooper’s artwork won out. It features a footprint left on the lunar surface by one of its first visitors. Arching over this image are the names of the NASA programs that made possible the landing, “MERCURY, ” “GEMINI, ” and “APOLLO, ” along with images of the moon in different phases. “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST, ” the national motto, are among the other inscriptions on the obverse. The reverse is a reproduction of a photo that was taken of Buzz Aldrin’s visor during his visit to the moon.
