Hungary Goldgulden Matthias Corvinus NGC AU58 Medieval Gold Coin 1458-1490
A remarkable survivor from medieval Europe. This goldgulden was struck during the reign of Matthias Corvinus, one of Hungary’s most celebrated kings and a major figure of the Renaissance. Known as “Matthias the Just, ” he transformed Hungary into a powerful kingdom and established one of Europe’s finest libraries and courts. Coins from his reign are prized by medieval collectors for their historical weight and relative scarcity in high grades. The Hungarian goldgulden was modeled after the Florentine florin and served as a trusted gold trade coin across Central Europe. This example grades AU58 from NGC – just a whisper from Mint State. Exceptional for a hammered coin over 500 years old. Strong remaining luster, sharp detail on the shield and figure, with only light friction from minimal circulation. Natural planchet texture and minor edge irregularities are typical for hand-struck medieval coinage.
