ATOCHA SHIPWRECK GOLD TREASURE BAR 1622 “MEL FISHER” 31.3OZ. ENRADA- MEL FISHER 1985 SALVAGE W/ COA! This stunning Shipwreck Gold Treasure bar from the Nuestra SeƱora De Atocha from 1622 was recovered July 20th 1985 by Treasure Salvors, Inc. The weight is 31.3oz (Troy ounces for gold are 31g’s as opposed to the traditional 28g) The measurements are 21.3cm x 3.2mm x 1.3cm, this is a very large bar (8 1/2 inches x 1.3in x 1/2 in). Poured & Struck in COLOMBIA from the Pena-Randa Foundry in 1621-22. I have researched many of the En Rada bars and this certainly ranks near the top in condition and clarity. Theres also an assayer scoop or bite located at center left (called the Bocado). These bars came from off the Keys Deep Water Wreck off the Gulf. In all my research and through colleagues long term research theres approximately 12 of these bars known. (Scroll below to read more on the Atocha 1622 Shipwreck). OUR LADY of ATOCHA, SANK IN 1622 OFF THE FLORIDA KEYS, HAVANA BOUND FOR SPAIN. HER GALLEON FILLED WITH ALL TREASURE: GOLD, SILVER, COPPER, TOBACCO, GEMS, AND JEWELRY. SHE NEVER MADE IT OUT OF VERACRUZ TO HAVANA TO JOIN THE FLEET OF THE TIERRA FIRME (MAINLAND) FLEET. HER TREASURE WAS SO ENORMOUS THAT IT TOOK 2 MONTHS TO LOAD THE GALLEON FULL (IN THE SUMMER OF 1622 IN WHAT IS NOW PANAMA CITY). SHE SET SAIL 6 WEEKS BEHIND SCHEDULE ON SEPTEMBER 4TH, 1622. ONLY TWO DAYS LATER ON THE 6TH, SHE WAS PUSHED ONTO THE CORAL REEFS BY A SEVERE HURRICANE APPROX. 35 MILES WEST OF KEY WEST. ALL BUT 3 SAILORS AND TWO SLAVES DROWNED QUICKLY AS HER HULL WAS RIPPED APART BADLY. DUE TO THE GALLEONS SITTING IN 55 OF OCEAN AND YET A SECOND HURRICANE HITTING (FURTHER SCATTERING THE TREASURE) THE FOLLOWING MONTH, SALVAGE EFFORTS WERE SEVERLY HINDERED. WITH THE HELP OF INDIAN SLAVES, OVER A COURSE OF YEARS, ALMOST HALF THE TREASURE WAS RECOVERED FROM THE SANTA MARGARITA. THIS WAS MAINLY ACCOMPLISHED, CRUDELY ENOUGH, BY SENDING SLAVES DOWN IN A BRASS MAKESHIFT DIVING BELL (WITH A WINDOW ON THE SIDE). MANY OF THESE EFFORTS ENDED IN DEATH FOR THE SLAVES. SPAINS SHIPWRECKED TREASURE CAUSED NOTHING SHORT OF DEVESTATION TO ITS FINANCES, WHICH WERE IN DIER NEED TO FUND THEIR 30 YEAR WAR. ALTHOUGH THE SPANISH RECOVERY EFFORTS WERE SOMEWHAT SUCCESSFUL OVER 10 YEARS, THEY NEVER DID FIND THE ATHOCHA! FINALLY, AFTER 16.5 YEARS OF SEARCHING SHE WAS FINALLY DISCOVERED IN 1985 BY MEL FISHER (TREASURE SALVORS), PRODUCING HER GOLD AND RARE MUZO EMERALDS. MOST OF THE GOLD AND SILVER COINS WERE MINTED BETWEEN 1598 TO 1621 (THERE WERE ALSO EARLIER DATES, EVEN AS FAR BACK AS THE EARLY 1500S ON BOARD). TREASURE IS STILL BEING BROUGHT UP TO THIS DAY. Free Template Maker by ISDNtek. He searched doggedly for the treasure for 16 years (and tragically lost his son and daughter-in-law when a salvage boat capsized during the search). In 1985, the Fisher team came upon a large portion of the wreckage. Three large silver bars, two small gold “finger” bars and one gold disc that went down with the Atocha will be featured in Freeman’s Jan. 25 Fine English & Continental Furniture & Decorative Arts sale. In the early 1600s, the Spanish monarchy dispatched armadas regularly to stock up on gold, silver and gems from the Americas to help fund its army. The Atocha was one of several ships that fell prey to Caribbean hurricanes en route home from Cuba and sank off what would become Key West, Fla. On the Atocha, 260 people drowned and about 70 tons of treasure were lost. Add a map to your own listings. The Crown is 90%+ Full and complete, as well as the 100% strike on the denomination and Shield. The devices (especially on the date, denomination and shield and crown) are Very SHARP! In fact, sharper than the 63 Ive viewed. The Reverse has a complete Cross with well above average centering, leaving room for a good portion of the Legend (HISPANIRUM REX). This piece exhuberates LUSTER throughout! 1715 Plate Fleet Shipwreck. The 1715 Treasure Fleet was a Spanish treasure fleet returning from the New World to Spain. In the evening of July 30, 1715 , seven days after departing from Havana, Cuba, 11 of the 12 ships of this fleet were lost in a hurricane near present day Vero Beach, Florida. Because the fleet was carrying silver, it is also known as the 1715 Plate Fleet (plata being the Spanish word for silver plate). Some artifacts and even coins still wash up on Florida beaches from time to time. Around 1,000 sailors perished while a small number survived on lifeboats. Many ships, including pirates, took part in the initial salvage. Initially a privateer, Henry Jennings was first accused of piracy for attacking such salvage ships and claiming their salvages. Thus, earning this coinage the name of Pirates Gold! The story begins with the War of the Spanish Succession ending, as well as the death of the Spanish Queen. King Philip found a new bride, Elizabeth Farnesse, Duchess of Palma and needed a new Queens Dowry. The king would send two separate fleets to the New World (after the Government had cancelled all sailings from the Americas to Spain for two years), which would load up at separate ports Vera Cruz and Cartegena, then meet up in Havana. The plan was to have one large Armada with a heavy navel escort, carrying the accumulated precious metals and jewels from the last three years. Of which, the average year sailed in between 90 and 120 million francs. Treasure The Cartegena Fleet arrived first in Havana (in March), loaded down by chests filled with Gold coins (from Santa Fe de Bogota), Colombian Emeralds from Muzo mine and gold jewelry from Peru. Awaiting the fleet of Vera Cruz, commanded by Gen. Don Juan Eseban de Ubilla, carrying Gold and Silver ingots. However Don Juan was delayed in Vera Cruz awaiting pack mule trains from Acapulco. Finally in the first week of May the mule train arrived with their silks, ivories and blue and white porcelains. The details of the Queens jewels are blurry at best, but were known to include and Emerald ring weighing in at 74 carats, a heart designed from 130 matched pears, a pair of earrings each of 14 pears and a rosary of pure coral. There were 8 chests in total and stowed in Ubillas cabin (who was a senior military officer and had overall command). After many other delays, finally the Galleons left Havana on Wednesday July 24th, with favorable winds pushing them at nearly 6 knots. By the 29th the winds were over 70 knots, with gusts hitting over 100 knots. The chaplain said, the water flew in the air like arrows, doing injury to those it hit. Finally, at 2:30am on July 31st, the flagship hit the reefs and torn apart, throwing all off her decks and 223 sailors were pounded to death by the rocks. More than 700 men were missing, wreckage and bodies scattered for almost 30 miles along the coast. For the next four years the Spanish attempted to salvage the treasure, but finally ceased in 1719. The dangers or sharks, pirates and Indians were just too great. There was an estimate of 14 million pesos registered treasure lost. This sunken fleet of Galleons is still giving up her Treasure! In 2010 the claim owners discovered the only bronze swivel gun ever found on the 1715 Fleet. Tucked away inside this the bronze cannon were 51 Gold Escudos and 40 Silver Reales. Most recently, another find of 50 Feet of Gold Chain and 5 additional Gold escudos were just recovered, approx.. Free Template Maker by ISDNtek. Add a map to your own listings. The Bail will hold approx. A 6 or 7mm chain, as the Chain featured here (22kt plated) IS INCLUDED and is 5mm in thickness and 24 long.
